How Sitting in Silence Transformed My Decision-Making: Expanded Edition
Discover the untapped power of silence to enhance clarity and make better choices.
In a world filled with constant noise, finding moments of silence can be a game-changer for decision-making. By disconnecting from the external culprits and embracing quiet moments, we allow our minds to process information and emotions more effectively.
This article explores the benefits of sitting in silence.
Do you ever feel like the noises never stop? Are you surrounded by constant distractions and information?
In our connected world, finding a moment of peace and silence can allow you the space to make better decisions with more clarity and understanding.
Are you willing to turn off the device or shut down the culprits of the noisy chaos?
My husband went night fishing this past weekend, leaving me the full reign of the house. These past weeks I have been contemplating how to move forward with my writing, sharing years of knowledge and where I want my next steps to be.
And this was the perfect opportunity to give things space.
On Sunday morning, as we were having coffee talking about the excursion, he asked what I did all night. Originally, I was going to watch a chick flick movie and hang out. But I decided to hang out by myself in the space.
He was perplexed that I turned the TV off to enjoy the silence.
Because our minds are bombarded with so much information and activity that it’s difficult to create a clear space in the noise.
The Power of Silence
Without the distractions, it’s easier for our minds to process information and emotions without chasing that shiny squirrel.
By embracing the silence, you can have clearer, more thoughtful decisions by giving the brain a space to breathe.
By turning off the television, radio, and computer, I was able to allow my mind to wander aimlessly. Same as if you would meditate for x amount of time. The goal is to clear the thoughts and let things just happen.
Disconnection From Chaos
Noise from outside sources causes constant stimuli for me, and it’s so distracting.
Continuous exposure to noise and information causes me too much stress. Which in turn creates a giant cloud in my judgment because of the chaos inside my brain.
We went to eat at this sports bar once and there was a bank of televisions with multiple sporting events. I watched as people were so distracted by them that there was very little conversation going on outside the sports games.
Adding Silence To Your Day To Day
Integrating periods of silence into your daily routine doesn’t require big investments but will yield great results.
Regularly adding moments of silence will help you to build mental resilience and clarity.
For me, the first step is to eliminate the distractions (aka the television) and find a comfortable space. Weather permitting, I’ll open up the window and let the outside in, and then sit in my comfy chair with my feet up and grab a book or my journal.
Occasionally, I’ll just sit and think, and other times doodle or write.
The Benefits of Silence
Sitting in silence doesn’t mean you have to sit. Walking, taking a car ride, lounging in a pool. They’ve worked for me too.
And the benefits are the best results of taking the time to spend time with me. I make better decisions or think of different ways to approach a problem.
So next time you’re overwhelmed, remember that the best answers might come in the quiet moments. Try it for a week—find your silence and see what it reveals.
